Place & climate

  • Location: Around Cairanne in north-western Vaucluse, near the Aygues.
  • Soils: Alluvial terraces, sand, clay, limestone rubble and marl.
  • Climate: Mediterranean conditions, modified by local altitude, shelter and exposure.

Grapes & label

  • Wine identity: Dry red and white cru.
  • Grape references: Grenache-led reds with Syrah/Mourvèdre; Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne are principal white references.
  • Style cues: Reds often combine fruit and spice with supple tannins; whites form a distinct part of the appellation.
  • Key contrast: Cairanne is its own cru appellation, not simply a current named Côtes du Rhône Villages entry.

At the table

  • Assess: Separate red and white. Assess red fruit, tannin and alcohol; assess white acidity, texture and any oak influence rather than assuming a light style.
  • Pair: Try red with roast pork and olive jus, or white with chicken and creamy leeks or grilled sea bass with herb butter.
  • Service: Start red at 16–18°C and white at 10–12°C. Taste before aerating; check mature reds for sediment and decant gently if necessary.
