Place & climate

  • Location: A southern Rhône appellation across eligible communes on both banks.
  • Landscape: Hillsides, terraces and plains bring varied soils, exposure and water availability.
  • Climate: Mediterranean influence is strongest across the southern production area.

Grapes & label

  • Colours: Red, white and rosé; red is the dominant reference.
  • Reds: Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre are principal southern blending anchors, with other varieties under local rules.
  • Whites: Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne and other Rhône white grapes provide a varied palette.
  • Hierarchy: A stricter appellation than regional Côtes du Rhône; eligible geographical names may appear with Villages.
  • Named examples: Séguret, Sablet, Visan and Plan de Dieu remain named Villages references. Laudun, Cairanne, Rasteau and Vinsobres are separate crus today.

At the table

  • Assess: Read the complete label, including any geographical name and colour. Assess tannin, alcohol and texture; a category alone does not establish readiness or quality.
  • Pair: Try red with lamb stew or pork and olive jus, white with creamy poultry, and rosé with grilled vegetables and fish. Match intensity to the specific cuvée.
  • Service: Start red at 16–18°C and white/rosé at 10–12°C. Taste before choosing aeration; gently separate sediment in mature reds if present.
