Pioneers and renewal
Domaine de la Soumade
- The decisive harvest: Frédéric Roméro was initially passionate about mechanics and motorbikes. His first harvest at the estate in 1996 ultimately led him to choose winegrowing as his profession.
- Independence chosen by his father: His father André had already decided to make the wine himself from his mother’s vines, whose grapes had previously gone to the cooperative. Together, they developed bottle sales, notably in England.
- Grenache, all the way to Rasteau: Frédéric also reports studying planting density in Bordeaux; the grenache rows were made denser to better control yields. The estate’s red Rasteau is grenache-led and spends eighteen months in stainless-steel tanks: an expression of this southern cru without wood ageing.
