A district larger than Hemel-en-Aarde

  • Place: Walker Bay belongs to Cape South Coast. Hermanus is its coastal reference point; vineyards extend inland and into several different wards.
  • Wider district: Hemel-en-Aarde is an important part of Walker Bay, not the whole district. Bot River supplies another local reference with Chenin and a wider red-grape range.

The three Hemel-en-Aarde wards

  • Hemel-en-Aarde Valley: Closest to Hermanus and the sea; clay-rich, shale-derived sites are important. Hamilton Russell’s estate Pinot Noir is an exact ward reference.
  • Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley: Continue inland along the valley. Sandstone- and granite-derived sites contrast with the lower valley’s shale, alongside changes in exposure and ripening time.
  • Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge: Farther inland and higher, with shale-derived ground and a later ripening context. It is its own ward, not an informal synonym for the other two.

Compare bottles, not soil slogans

  • Style: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the two clearest anchors. Ocean influence can preserve freshness, while harvest, extraction and oak change fruit, tannin and texture.
  • Service: Taste young Pinot before decanting. For Chardonnay, match the actual barrel and lees weight to fish or poultry. The wards identify place, not a fixed ranking from light to powerful.
