A traditional oasis south-east of the city

  • Place: Maipú lies east of Luján de Cuyo, close to Mendoza city. Its vineyards are part of the old irrigated oasis, with river terraces and generally lower sites than the high western Uco vineyards.
  • Identity: Malbec remains important, while Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Bonarda broaden the red-wine picture. Many familiar wineries have premises here; their complete ranges need not all use Maipú grapes.

Use two place clues

  • Lunlunta: The recognised Lunlunta IG is in Maipú. Historic Malbec vineyards on the river-terrace landscape offer a useful contrast with high western Uco sites.
  • Barrancas: This southern Maipú district adds lower, stony alluvial sites and a useful Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah reference. Local differences matter more than assuming one taste for all Maipú wines.

Separate a visit from a wine origin

  • Practical example: A cellar or restaurant in Maipú is an address. A wine’s declared grape origin may be Lunlunta, another Mendoza district or a blend of places. Catena Appellation Lunlunta Malbec is a geographical bottle reference even though Catena’s main winery is elsewhere.

At the table

  • Malbec: Pair with roast lamb and rosemary or steak with a savoury jus; the meat and sauce support a structured red.
  • Service: Structured reds: 16–18°C; decant mature sedimented bottles gently just before service.
