Three departments, one valley name

  • Geography: Valle de Uco lies south-west of Mendoza city. From north to south, learn Tupungato, Tunuyán and San Carlos: these are departments, not three individual vineyards.
  • Why it matters: Elevation, proximity to the Andes, cold-air drainage and alluvial fans create varied growing conditions. Malbec and Cabernet Franc can combine ripe fruit with freshness; Chardonnay is an equally useful high-site reference.

Tupungato and Tunuyán

  • Gualtallary · Tupungato: A large, varied district and wine area in northern Uco. High vineyards such as Adrianna show why the area is studied for Chardonnay as well as Malbec and Cabernet Franc; the district is not a single vineyard.
  • Los Chacayes · Tunuyán: A protected IG on stony Andean alluvial-fan terrain. Its legal area was extended in 2023, so it cannot simply be treated as the original district boundary.
  • San Pablo · Tunuyán: A delimited IG close to the mountains. Its cooler higher sites make Chardonnay and Pinot Noir useful comparisons with Uco’s better-known reds.

San Carlos: distinguish two origins

  • Paraje Altamira: A delimited IG with its own boundary, associated with the Tunuyán River’s alluvial fan and local carbonate-coated stones. It is a place shared by several producers, not a single estate.
  • La Consulta: A town/district and recognised IG in San Carlos, with an established Malbec tradition. Keep the La Consulta name distinct from nearby Paraje Altamira; a postal address and the bottle’s protected origin may differ.

Taste the choices within the place

  • In the glass: Freshness and structured tannins may coexist with ripe fruit. Gran Enemigo Gualtallary 2022 combines Cabernet Franc with Malbec, uses some whole bunches and matures in concrete; Zuccardi Finca Piedra Infinita 2021 also matures in concrete. These are specific choices, not requirements for all Uco wines.

At the table

  • Malbec: Pair with roast lamb and rosemary or steak with a savoury jus; the meat and sauce support a structured red.
  • Chardonnay: A textured Chardonnay suits roast chicken with mushroom cream; the wine’s body carries the sauce.
  • Service: Fresh dry whites: 9–11°C; textured whites: 11–13°C. Structured reds: 16–18°C; decant mature sedimented bottles gently just before service.
