Tyrrell’s

Hunter Valley

  • Toast comes from time, not wood: With age, « Vat 1 Semillon » transforms: the 2009 combines lemon, wax and toast after vinification without oak. This complexity developed in bottle. The 2019 also follows a stainless-steel path from fermentation to bottling.
  • Short Flat at the heart of « Vat 1 »: The 2019 brings together grapes from old, unirrigated vines. Short Flat, whose oldest plantings date to 1923, is at the heart of this selection of several parcels: « Vat 1 Semillon » is not confined to a single vineyard.
  • Depth at low alcohol: « Vat 1 Semillon » 2019: flowers and citrus, a deep, powerful palate despite its 10.5% alcohol, then an elegant finish. The acidity remains supple for this long-ageing cuvée; the estate intends it for more than ten years in the cellar.

Brokenwood

Hunter Valley

  • Graveyard, a vineyard bottled separately since 1983: Brokenwood began making Graveyard Vineyard’s grapes as a separate wine in 1983. The Hunter Valley shiraz became the estate’s flagship, retaining the identity of this specific Pokolbin site.
  • Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz 2023: Plum, blueberry and pepper are joined by earthy and spicy nuances. Silky texture meets perceptible tannic grain, carrying the palate into a long finish.
  • The cemetery that was never built: A cemetery had been planned for the land, but it never materialised. Graveyard preserves that unusual piece of the site’s history in the name of the wine.
Pioneers and renewal

Clonakilla

Canberra District · Murrumbateman

  • The white ends up in the red: John Kirk wanted to make a white from his first viognier bunches. Returning from Côte-Rôtie for the 1992 harvest, his son Tim proposed fermenting them with shiraz: John agreed, and the experiment became « Shiraz Viognier », Clonakilla’s signature.
  • Fragrance, pepper and restraint: « Shiraz Viognier » 2023: a highly fragrant red carried by pure fruit and peppery notes. The palate retains moderate body and great elegance.
