Pioneers and renewal

Domaine Léon Barral - Didier Barral

  • Preserving water and soils: Didier Barral combines vines, livestock and other crops in pursuit of more living, permeable soils able to retain water. On the schists of Faugères, he explains that he must contend with drought and erosion.
  • Animals and the memory of place: His cows graze the plots in winter, adding organic matter; trees and hedges are also returning to the landscape. The appellation recounts a more personal memory of this attachment to place: as a child, Didier fished in the Valinière stream.
  • Freshness as a starting point: Barral explains that he seeks fluidity in his wines. After the drought of 1995, the freshness of some tanks led him to question the permeability of their soils: this is the connection he makes between his wine and his farming work.
