Place & climate

  • Location: The regional AOP extends from the Nîmes area towards the Spanish border, including parts of Roussillon in Pyrénées-Orientales.
  • Climate: Mediterranean, with differences according to proximity to the sea and inland relief.
  • Soils & slopes: Limestone, schist and river-borne gravels are among the varied geological settings.

Grapes & label

  • Name: Languedoc replaced Coteaux du Languedoc as the regional appellation name in 2007.
  • Red & rosé: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan and Cinsault are principal learning references.
  • White: Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Piquepoul Blanc, Roussanne, Marsanne and Rolle are useful anchors.
  • Distinguish: A wine grown geographically in Languedoc may instead carry another AOP, an IGP or Vin de France.
  • Three colours: Red, rosé and white categories exist; there is no single regional blend or style.
  • The bottle: Add the producer’s location and actual blend to make the broad appellation informative.

At the table

  • Red: Grilled sausages, lamb meatballs or mushroom pie suits a fruit-led, moderately tannic blend.
  • White: Sea bream with fennel or roast chicken suits a dry white with some breadth.
  • Rosé: Ratatouille, grilled prawns or a courgette tart suits fresh fruit and a dry finish.
  • Cheese: Tomme de brebis or Cantal with red; young Comté with white.
  • Service: Reds around 15–17°C; whites and rosés around 9–11°C.
