Defining estates and collectives

Château de Roquefort - Raimond de Villeneuve / Rouge Provence

  • Hail and mutual support: In July 2012, hail devastated Roquefort’s vineyards. Dozens of estates offered grapes or must, the juice destined to ferment, so that Raimond de Villeneuve could still produce wine.
  • Solidarity continued: These donations produced the 2012 « Grêle » cuvées and helped the business through a year without its usual harvest. This mutual support then contributed to the creation of Rouge Provence in 2014, to continue that solidarity among growers.
  • An everyday bar red today: « Gueule de Loup » 2023, in IGP Bouches-du-Rhône, is led by grenache. The estate presents it as its everyday bar red, fruity and fresh.
Essential references

Domaine de Trévallon

  • Half cabernet, half syrah: Trévallon’s red stands out in Provence through its combination of equal parts cabernet sauvignon and syrah. This was Éloi Dürrbach’s choice when he planted his vineyard in the Alpilles.
  • The blend before the designation: The cabernet proportion exceeds that permitted for Les Baux-de-Provence. He retained it: the wine took the vin de pays designation, then IGP Alpilles. Here, the choice of wine determines the designation.
  • Recognition at the table: Its recognition also developed at the table: according to La Revue du vin de France, purchases by L’Oustau de Baumanière helped make it known in the 1980s.
Discoveries and alternatives

Domaine Hauvette - Dominique Hauvette

  • Cornaline and the choice of few inputs: Dominique Hauvette advocates winemaking without oenological inputs apart from a little sulphur, linking this approach to her work with living systems. Cornaline 2018 carries IGP Alpilles; older wines bore Les Baux-de-Provence.
  • Learning the craft in Saint-Rémy: Hauvette came to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence for a month and stayed, raising horses and working as a house painter. A neighbour passed on his farmhouse and two hectares of vines, and Éloi Dürrbach helped her learn to make wine.
