Place & climate

  • Location: The commune of Cassis, on the Mediterranean coast east of Marseille.
  • Relief: Terraced vineyards occupy a coastal amphitheatre with protection from the Mistral.
  • Soils & slopes: Shallow calcareous soils and colluvial deposits in a Cretaceous geological setting.
  • Climate: Sunny and maritime; local shelter moderates exposure and frost is uncommon.

Grapes & label

  • White identity: Dry whites based on Marsanne and Clairette are the principal reference.
  • Red & rosé: Smaller categories use black varieties including Grenache, Cinsault and Mourvèdre.
  • Name: Cassis here is a wine appellation, not crème de cassis blackcurrant liqueur.

Style & table

  • Substantial white: A fuller white can suit bouillabaisse; very hot rouille can overpower the wine.
  • Fresher white: Grilled sea bream, clams or prawns with herbs suit fresher examples; floral, herbal and sometimes saline impressions vary.
  • Rosé: Try red mullet or tomato-and-anchovy tart with a fruit-led rosé.
  • Cheese: Young Crottin, mild Tomme de brebis or young Comté with white; avoid very pungent cheeses that dominate it.
  • Service: Start whites at 10–12°C and rosés at 9–11°C. Cassis also makes reds; their tannin and maturity guide service.
