Place & climate

  • Location: Around Nantes near the Atlantic end of the Loire.
  • Climate: Strong maritime influence; rainfall, spring frost and harvest conditions can shape the season.
  • Soils: Ancient igneous and metamorphic rocks, including granite, gneiss and gabbro, occur across the vineyard.

Read the names

  • Muscadet family: Muscadet, Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine, Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire and Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu are distinct AOCs.
  • Melon: The principal grape identity; Muscadet is not Muscat.
  • Gros Plant: Gros Plant du Pays Nantais is a separate white appellation associated with Folle Blanche.

At the table

  • Assess: Compare a lean, brisk Melon or Folle Blanche with a broader lees-aged white; the sauce should grow richer only as the wine gains texture.
  • Pair: Try oysters, whelks with a little lemon mayonnaise, or grilled sardines: freshness lifts the seafood’s salt and fat. A fuller Muscadet suits scallops with beurre blanc, whose butter gives the wine’s texture something to meet.
  • Service: Start brisk wines at 8–10°C, young sur lie at 9–11°C, and mature lees-rich Muscadet at 11–13°C. Pour a fresh, expressive bottle directly; test brief air only for a closed, robust wine. Separate any mature sediment gently.
  • Lees: Sur lie can add texture and a lightly spritzy impression; it does not make the wine a sparkling AOC.
  • Style: Dry, fresh white wines are the principal reference.
