Essential references

José Maria da Fonseca

Península de Setúbal

  • Alambre: age-indicated and vintage Moscatel: Alambre offers both an age-indicated blend and a dated harvest. ‘Alambre 20 Anos’ draws on the old Moscatels kept at Adega dos Teares Velhos in Azeitão, including a 1911 mentioned by the house. Its age statement describes the blend; ‘Alambre Moscatel de Setúbal’ 2019 identifies one harvest.
  • Five months on the skins, then long maturation: For ‘Alambre 20 Anos’, five months of skin contact precede long maturation. Candied orange, coffee, caramel and hazelnut accompany a supple, persistent palate: the house’s old casks are central to this style.
  • The 2019 harvest: Alambre Moscatel de Setúbal 2019 combines candied orange peel and raisin, generous sweetness and a long, fresh finish.

Casa Ermelinda Freitas

Península de Setúbal

  • A mother and daughter in the cellar: Ermelinda Freitas and her daughter Leonor modernised the family winery in Fernando Pó together. The “Dona Ermelinda” brand preserves the memory of this inheritance passed down through women.
  • Castelão leads the blend: In “Dona Ermelinda Tinto” 2015, Castelão accounts for 70% of the wine, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Touriga Nacional. This cuvée shows the local grape’s central role in Palmela reds.
  • A broad, round red: “Dona Ermelinda Tinto” 2015: very ripe and candied red fruit, integrated oak, broad substance and round tannins.
