Further study

Distinctive local wines

  • Valencia DO: Merseguera is a useful white reference; Moscatel de Alejandría also produces aromatic sweet wines, including fortified styles.
  • Alicante Fondillón: A long-aged wine from Monastrell left to overripen on the vine. Its alcohol comes naturally from fermentation, without fortification.
  • Ageing & service: Fondillón requires at least ten years in oak. Check sweetness and bottle character; an ordinary Alicante Monastrell is not automatically Fondillón.

Read the regional map

  • Valencia DO: The denomination is not a synonym for all wine from the Valencian Community.
  • Cava Requena: Requena is also one of Cava’s four zones; Cava and Utiel-Requena remain separate protected origins.
  • Bottle first: Read producer, exact origin, colour and sweetness before applying regional style associations.
