Location: The Thouarcé area, now within Bellevigne-en-Layon, on the Layon’s right bank.
Grape: Chenin Blanc.
Style: Concentrated sweet still white from overripe grapes, often with noble rot.
Hierarchy & table
Name: A separate sweet-white AOC; Bonnezeaux is not a Premier Cru designation within Coteaux du Layon.
Harvest: Selective successive hand-picking is an important production reference.
Assess: Assess the sweet Chenin’s concentration and acidity before choosing a rich cheese or a more delicate fruit dish.
Pair: Roquefort suits a concentrated bottle through the contrast of sweetness and salt. Apricot tart with an almond base echoes ripe fruit; the wine should be at least as sweet as the pastry. Mildly spiced poultry with apricot jus is a savoury option if the sauce is not overpowering.
Service: Start at 10–12°C in small pours. Let the wine unfold in the glass; consider brief air only for a robust closed bottle. For mature wine, check condition and gently separate sediment if present.
