Entre-deux-Mers

Place & identity

  • Location: Within the country between the Garonne and Dordogne.
  • Classic white: A dry-white AOC, commonly based on Sauvignon, Sémillon and Muscadelle.
  • Current red: Red Entre-deux-Mers is authorised from the 2023 vintage. “White only” describes the earlier rules, not the current appellation.

Read the label

  • Red grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are central references; other traditional Bordeaux reds are possible.
  • Geography versus AOC: The wider district also produces Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur reds. A wine must satisfy the specific Entre-deux-Mers rules to use that AOC; geographical location alone is insufficient.
  • White-wine ageing: The September 2025 specification requires whites to remain on lees until the first 15 November after harvest, normally in the harvest year. It does not specifically require fine lees.

At the table

  • Assess: Check whether the bottle is dry white or red. For the classic white style, assess citrus or herbal fruit, acidity and any lees texture without assuming every blend is Sauvignon-dominant.
  • Pair: A crisp white can suit Arcachon oysters, a seafood platter or fresh goat cheese. For a red Entre-deux-Mers, turn to roast duck or a savoury beef preparation suited to its body.
  • Service: Start a crisp white around 8–10°C, keeping it cool without burying its aromas in ice-cold service. Start reds around 16–18°C and decide aeration after tasting rather than applying the white-wine routine.
