How beer is made

Water

• the brewing medium and largest component.
• Grains: mainly malted barley, sometimes wheat and other grains.
• Hops: bitterness and aromas.
• Yeasts: fermentation of sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide.
• Some styles add fruit, spices or sugars.

• Malting germinates grain, then stops germination by drying.
• It prepares enzymes needed for starch conversion; drying and roasting contribute colour and cereal, bread, caramel or coffee notes.
