Colombard
Also known as Colombar
A productive white variety valued for lively acidity and citrus or tropical-fruit aromas. In South Africa it supports both fresh varietal wines and blends; Colombar is the local spelling.
Aromatic palette
grapefruit · lime · guava · passion fruit · floral notes

What could you confuse it with?
Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin can share acidity and fruit aromas. Compare the whole structure and exact label rather than treating guava as proof.

Regional roots
South-western France, especially Gascony and the Charentes, with further plantings in South Africa and California.
In the vineyard
Vigorous, fertile and productive; yield and canopy need balancing. Powdery mildew on leaves and grey rot near maturity remain concerns.

Winemaking & development
Cool, protective fermentation can retain aromatic fruit. Residual sugar and lees or barrel choices alter the balance, so an aromatic nose does not establish sweetness.
Service & ageing
Serve fresh styles around 8–10°C; check sweetness before recommending the bottle.
Pairing logic
Fresh dry examples suit seafood, salads and lighter dishes with citrus or herbs.
